What will you be doing? 
Are you curious to find out why certain thing happens? Are you excited in seeing many different products from different industries and identifying the reasons why a product cracked, discolored, or deformed?

This position is responsible for investigative analysis, evaluation of failed components; determining appropriate test plans; generating quotation pricing; performing testing; determine root cause; writing reports; and communicating with clients. This position is also responsible for providing technical sales support and mentoring/training less senior technical personnel for chemistry or polymer science. 


  • The Failure Analyst is responsible for standard to moderately complex material (plastics, fabrics) or component failure analysis. To do this, the Failure Analyst must:
    • Identify client objectives and develop specific test plans to investigate root cause of failed product
    • Assist with project quotation (pricing/turnaround) based on developed test plan
    • Perform or direct technicians to perform materials testing.
    • Communicate project status and test results to client, sales personnel, and management throughout testing. Provide on-going support to clients as needed.
    • Determine root cause and consult on preventive and corrective actions
    • Produce fully detailed failure analysis reports
    • Manage failure investigation to meet project deadline
    • Efficient project close-out
    • Conduct thorough failure background research
    • Ability to discuss part problems with clients in depth and develop information about potential sources of failure (process, materials, transport, environment)
    • Ability to adapt methods and equipment available to determine critical information related to product failure
    • Within policy guidelines, identify, properly document, and recommend engineering judgments.
  • Follow sample handling procedures, ensuring that sample is logged in and out of the system.  Properly package sample for shipment
  • Demonstrate enough technical, material (Plastics, Fabrics) and manufacturing knowledge to be considered an expert in one or more disciplines for the local office
  • Maintain and assure normal function of failure analysis test equipment
  • Maintain safe, clean and orderly working area.

What qualifications do you need?  
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science/Engineering, Chemistry/Organic chemistry or related fields; M.S. or PhD degree is a plus.
  • 2 years or more directly related experience performing a variety of materials and/or component testing; previous failure analysis experience a plus. 
  • Testing experience in non-routine investigative testing for identification of contaminants, process troubleshooting and/or root cause analysis
  • Prior project management experience.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, make technical decisions and engineering judgments independently, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical documents
  • Be aware of, and adhere to, safety practices and policies to ensure your own safety, as well as the safety of others who may be affected by your actions at work
  • Details-oriented and able to effectively prioritize and organize workload, with efficient time management
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively in verbal, written and presentation formats
  • Customer focused and quality driven.
  • Critical thinking skills, strong curiosity and can-do attitude.
  • Ability to travel as needed
